ABOUT USHI

The Utah Suzuki Harp Institute (USHI) is the only Suzuki summer institute that is completely dedicated to the harp, harp students, teachers and parents. USHI brings students ages 3-18 together for one week to learn, grow and progress in the Suzuki repertoire and philosophy. It typically has around 100 harp students and 10-25 teacher trainees in attendance and is a week that most students and parents look forward to every other year. The magic of Utah Suzuki Harp Institute thrives today thanks to the vision of Maria Phippen, when she started the first Utah Suzuki Harp Institute in 2008. However, USHI today was not the first institute for harp. Before the current form, there were and currently are still are many institutes that collaborate with other instruments.  They are held in other states and countries around the world. Most summer Institutes are multi-instrument institutes that sometimes include the harp. While other instruments frequently collaborate together the sheer space and size that 100+ harps together in one spot pose is a tricky format for other institutes & because of this unique challenge USHI was born.

In 2023, Melanie Harper was appointed as the new USHI Director and we are excited for a new chapter of USHI held for the first time at UVU!
